Viva Vocalists: Two One-Act Operas
Monday, Feb 20 & Wednesday, Feb22
7:30 PM; FREE admission ($10 suggested donation); presented by the Fisher Ensemble
Viva Vocalists, the first class taught through Fisher Ensemble’s new education division, led by instructors Shawna Avinger and Kristen Ramer Liang, proudly presents two one-act operas that were adapted for television during its golden era (librettos by Arnold Sundgaard). Kurt Weill’s Down In The Valley (1945-1948) combines traditional American folk tunes with strikingly modern harmonies to tell the Depression-era tale of two star-crossed lovers. Douglas Moore’s Gallantry (1958) pokes fun at the melodramatic world of television soap operas; this new production views a traditional doctor/nurse/patient love triangle through the lens of 1960’s counterculture. Running time app. 75 minutes, with one intermission.
